The GLP-1 exclusion does not apply to GLP-1 medications prescribed for Type 2 diabetes.
Over the past few years we have seen an explosion in the utilization of GLP-1 weight loss medications. The cost of these medications, if purchased through an insurance program such as the GFS plan, has continued to increase, while high quality direct-to-consumer programs are now able to sell these medications at a relatively low cost. As the availability of weight loss GLP-1 medications and direct-to-consumer alternatives continues to expand, we have evolved our benefits strategy.
The process to implement any third party, including Virta, is a multi-month ordeal. During the roughly four months utilized to implement and communicate the Virta program, as well as the two months since launch, the weight loss GLP-1 landscape has changed dramatically. We recognize the inconvenience of changing the process for obtaining weight loss GLP-1 medication in such a short period of time, however we feel it is necessary to continue to adapt as quickly as possible.
