Effective October 1, 2026, Gordon Food Service will discontinue insurance coverage for GLP-1 medications for weight loss.

Coverage of GLP-1 medications for weight-loss will end on October 1, 2026.

Prior Authorization (PA)

Existing weight loss GLP-1 PA’s will be allowed until September 30, 2026.

Exemptions

The GLP-1 exclusion does not apply to GLP-1 medications prescribed for Type 2 diabetes.

Over the past few years we have seen an explosion in the utilization of GLP-1 weight loss medications. The cost of these medications, if purchased through an insurance program such as the GFS plan, has continued to increase, while high quality direct-to-consumer programs are now able to sell these medications at a relatively low cost. As the availability of weight loss GLP-1 medications and direct-to-consumer alternatives continues to expand, we have evolved our benefits strategy.

The process to implement any third party, including Virta, is a multi-month ordeal. During the roughly four months utilized to implement and communicate the Virta program, as well as the two months since launch, the weight loss GLP-1 landscape has changed dramatically. We recognize the inconvenience of changing the process for obtaining weight loss GLP-1 medication in such a short period of time, however we feel it is necessary to continue to adapt as quickly as possible.

No. You will be able to refill your prescription as normal until September 30, 2026.

HSA contributions can be changed as often as desired for any reason. FSA contributions can’t be adjusted due to changes in medication coverage.

No. A change in formulary does not qualify as a special enrollment event.

No. Only dollars that run through the medical and pharmacy benefit will count toward your deductible or annual maximum.

Yes. GLP-1s for weight loss and related conditions are excluded from coverage.

No. There is no change to our pharmacy plan regarding GLP-1s for diabetes management.

Wegovy, Zepbound and Saxenda will no longer be covered even if you are currently using them. New GLP-1s that become available for the treatment of weight loss and related conditions will also be excluded.

No. GLP-1s for weight loss are now a benefit exclusion.

The cost depends on several factors, including which GLP-1 medication you take. Check with your doctor or pharmacist about pricing. Additionally:

  • Patient assistance programs and pharmacy discount services/platforms can help lower costs.
  • Some pharmaceutical manufacturers provide cost assistance through patient assistance programs or prescription savings cards to help cover part of the medication cost. You can get that information from the manufacturer website.
  • If you have a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), you may be able to use these funds to help pay for your medication on a pre-tax basis.
